Thursday, August 25, 2005 New State Advocacy Capacity-Building Pilot ProgramThe National Trust is offering a one-year technical assistance and training program to help statewide historic preservation organizations build their advocacy skills and increase their ability to improve historic preservation policies and legislation at the state level. The Request for Proposal (RFP) offers detailed information about the year-long program and the application deadline is Thursday, September 22, 2005. Wednesday, August 24, 2005 Find Out About Election Reform in Your StateCommon Cause has set up an online database that "allows you to search for election-related bills in a particular state legislature, link to the bills' web sites for their exact language, and also find out the current status of the bills."

Jolie's high visibility means she has easy access to powerful people, people who can effect change. She has met many world leaders and policy-makers to discuss refugee issues, and frequently has fund-raising benefits thrown in her honor.
However, there is a lot of work to be done. Although celebrity fame can bring attention to an issue, success doesn't come with every star endorsement. Yet, blogs are consistently viewed through the traditional lenses of politics or media, rather than as the communal social phenomenom that they are. Real political power and influence is now being wielded through online communities comprising millions of people. And trends suggest that this is only the beginning. Indeed, what we have seen to date are the outlines of a new politics.
A memo put out by NDN PAC offers basic background on political blogs, and strategic recommendations for effectively channeling their growing influence. It has been written by bloggers for use by the progressive political community and is grounded in the available data and first-hand political experience.

Monday, August 08, 2005 Impact Fund Helps Nonprofits Manage VolunteersThe UPS Foundation and two leading U.S. companies are joining to launch formally a unique grant-making fund to help non-profit organizations manage volunteers more effectively. In development for the past year, "IMPACT: A Fund for Change Through Volunteerism," will combine financial resources from The UPS Foundation, The Home Depot and Capital One Financial. Grants will be made to both national and local organizations to support projects aimed at improving the use of volunteers. Organizations will be encouraged to work together to address challenges in effective volunteer management that in the past they have tackled alone.
