A New Age of Giving

Many people who have snubbed traditional mailings or phonecalls have begun making online donations through sites like these:

  • SixDegrees.com:

On this site, supporters of nonprofits can encourage their closest friends/relatives to make donations to their favorite causes by creating charity badges.

  • Change.org:

This site has encouraged thousands of viewers to take action or make donations to politicians or nonprofits.

  • Apps.Facebook.com/causes:

With more than 2.5 million Facebook users raising over $300,000 for many different causes, this site allows users to create online advocacy forums for nonprofits and political candidates.

  • DoSomething.org:

Motivating youth to do something, this site boasts over 5,500 My Space friends and nearly 2,200 Facebook friends. With grants, interactive blogs, links to current projects, opportunities to give and volunteer, this site is doing something quite positive.

  • Firstgiving.com:

Offers a simple and efficient way to raise money for charities. If you can use an additional fundraising tool, visit this site.

  • Impact.MySpace.com:

With its new "Impact" channel, MySpace provides an expanded support base to nonprofits, social-action causes and presidential candidates by allowing viewers the chance to volunteer, earn PayPal donation badges, or find other ways to become more involved.

  • GiveMeaning.com:

Offers nonprofits more creative ways to raise funds through: giftcards, online profiles and desktop donation containers/door-to-door kits which say "Real Change from Spare Change."

  • Kiva.org:

Allows viewers to make zero-interest microfinance loans to needy entrepreneurs in developing countries. 134,000 online supporters have provided over $13 million in loans.
